Tahoma Chapter NATS General Meeting
4:20 p.m. HCC Building 7
Saturday, November 15, 2008
President Erin Guinup called the meeting to order.
Present: Nancy Vancil, Darcie Fulkerson, Cherry Van Overstraeten, Linda Ellingson, Nancy Bos, Kerstin O'Shields,
Sandra Glover.
The secretary read the April 22, 2008 minutes, which were approved as read.
The treasurer's report was read. Several revisions were necessarily made by the board earlier. The membership will need
to approve the corrected Treasurer's report at the next general meeting, when there is a quorum.
Old Business:
- Marvin Keenze workshop was a success, given the nature of difficulty with the Richard Miller cancellation.
The adjudication committee has expanded the event to two days: January 24 and April 18, 2009, both held at HCC.
The deadline for registration has been extended to December 15, 2008.
Online registration is urged; the plan is to transfer all information to online registration beginning next year.
Students will now submit a paper copy of the completed online application to the teacher with a check to the teacher for the
application fee.
The teacher will peruse the application for accuracy and submit it along with other studio applications with one check to
Tahoma Chapter NATS.
Several rules have changed regarding music choices, particularly in the Music Theatre division. Cherry Van Overstraeten has
written a report on the necessity for the revisions, which will be emailed to the membership.
- By-Laws report was given by Nancy Bos. There are only two remaining issues to be discussed before revision is complete.
A general membership vote to accept the by-laws will be held at the April 2009 meeting.
- The Scholarship Report was read by chairman Linda Ellingson.
The Scholarship audition will be held Monday, February 9, 2009, at HCC Building 7. Up to two $500.00 scholarships may be
offered.
The committee has revised the rules to accept a minimum of five finalists for the auditions on February 9.
Teachers no longer submit an endorsement letter of the applicant. A signature suffices.
The committee urged the membership to send in applications which are carefully prepared, complete and on time .
A discussion ensued regarding the pros and cons of email application process versus the paper/mail traditional
method.
New Business:
The National Association of Teachers of Singing gains 501c3 status pending a vote of approval of 51% by the general
membership. The Tahoma chapter by-laws and operating procedures will fall under the "umbrella" of the national organization,
with no other changes needing to be made to our by-laws or operating status. The chapter will garner many advantages as a
result of this change.
Website progress is being made by Dennis O'Shields, web manager. Kerstin O'Shields spoke to the need for a web liaison to
ensure only officially approved materials were added to the site.
Teachers Fundraising Show proposal was presented by Nancy Bos.
Discussion ensued regarding caution while proceeding to ensure strong and committed support from the membership before
undertaking the financial burden ($600.00) of the project.
NATS Regional Conference is set in the Fall of 2009. See Journal of Singing for more information.
Robert Edwin will be in the Northwest February 22-27, 2009, for an extended workshop. Contact Nancy Bos for specific
information.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:00 p.m.
